Walter "Killer" Kowalski, who has been hospitalized for several weeks now and been in a coma, died early this morning.
"Killer" was simply one of the greatest "bad guys" ever to enter a wrestling ring. He was a world class trainer of wrestlers as well. He leaves an undeniable legacy, not only on our local area (where he trained such wrestlers as Triple H, John Studd, China, Perry Saturn and many, many others out of his Boston area school) but worldwide as a wrestler and a world class human being.
On a personal note...anyone who wrestles in the New England area should know that each and every one of us owe Mr. Kowalski quite a bit. He was the one who educated a wave of new wresters in the late 70's/early 80's that in turn went on to train and influence other new wrestlers. To this day, his gritty, tough, no nonsense approach to wrestling predominates the area's style. For instance....Killer trained a guy named Bryan Walsh who in the late 80's took on a student named Scott C. Despres-later to be known as Maverick Wild. Despres went on to work for Jeff Costa/Lobsterman-one of Killer's original students. Jeff trained several area guys like Sonny Goodspeed, Bob Evans, DJ Baron, Tim Walker, Johnny Vegas and countless others. That chain represents only one particular offshoot of Kowalski's training; There are several others. The landscape of the local wrestling scene would be completely different
Any dealings I ever had with Walter were always good, and usually very educational. A devout vegetarian and dedicated fitness nut, up until a year or so ago Walter would be very hands on, demonstrating holds and moves to wrestling students. We've lost a true diamond in Walter Kowalski.
RIP Walter.
